Free Beginners' Chess Course - Richmond Public Library

Chess2Inspire in collaboration with the Richmond Public Library in improving the chess club activities in four of the branches (Brighouse, Ironwood, Steveston & Cambie), to include professional chess courses.  The target audience of the Beginner Level chess course are kids of the age group of 5-12 who has little or no experience in chess. Chess has proven to be of tremendous benefits to kids’ brain and social development.

The Beginner’s Chess Course consists of eight lessons that introduce kids to the proper rules and basic knowledge of different phrases of the chess game. The course will be repeated in cycles for up to 3 cycles in a fiscal year.

The Beginner Level Course has 5 topics which covers rules and basic elements of a chess game.

  • Beginner: Rules and Basics (20 elements)
  • Beginner: Checkmate (10 elements)
  • Beginner: Tactics (10 elements)
  • Beginner: Openings (10 elements)
  • Beginner: Endgames (10 elements)

Admission is free, pre-registration required, seats are limited, please register only if you can attend most of the 8 lessons.

Time: Wednesdays after school, 5:00-6:00pm

Course Duration: The Beginner’s course consists of 8 lessons, spans over 8 weeks (2 months)

Course Cycle:  There will be 3-4 course cycles per year
