Report on Final & Semi- Final:
It was another fun and exciting year for the Vancouver Rapid Chess Team Championship. 8 teams (BC Juniors, VCS Teachers, Wildcard, UBC, Chigorin Chess Club 1 & 2, VCS Students, and PoCo Chess Club) competed in a round-robin match format for a chance to qualify for the 4 team playoffs. There was one match (3 vs 3, 3 rounds) a month with a time control of 25 min +5 sec increment. After an 8 month regular season, the top 4 teams, BC Juniors, VCS Teachers, Wildcard, and UBC emerged as the contenders for the championship.
The semi-final and the final were held on Sunday, April 13. It was a day full of anticipation; the BC Juniors were looking to claim their first championship with last year’s first place seemingly slipping from their fingers, while the reigning champions VCS Teachers weren’t going to go without a hard fight. Wildcard and UBC were two other strong solid teams looking to cement their reputation as powerhouses.
The semi-final saw the BC Juniors playing UBC and VCS Teachers playing Wildcard. After a hard fought semi-final with both matches playing until the third round, BC Juniors and VCS Teachers overtook UBC and Wildcard respectively. All players were rewarded after the match with a special pizza delivery courtesy of Konstantin, the organizer. After a team captain’s meeting discussing the next season, the rematch final BC Juniors and VCS Teachers began. Halfway through the first round, things were not looking so good for the BC Juniors. All three games were looking grim for the BC Juniors. Davaa found himself in a losing endgame against Laurent while Tanraj’s game against Butch and Jack’s game against Max were both unclear. As Jack drew against Max, somehow Davaa salvaged a draw from his position and Tanraj managed to win in time trouble against Butch. After this almost-crisis for the BC Juniors, who wanted nothing more than a first, they managed to win the second round as well. During the final, there was also a blitz tournament which was won by Alisher from UBC, and a ceremonial cake was brought for celebration after the tournament was over. The day concluded with prizes ceremony and bughouse for the BC Juniors. Thanks again to Konstantin for organizing this event. - Jeremy Hui
